Werken van de Linschoten-Vereeniging

Nederland heeft een rijke reisgeschiedenis. Bibliotheken en archieven herbergen honderden verslagen van land- en zeereizen uit voorbije eeuwen. Dat inspireerde in 1908 een aantal historici en oud-zeevarenden tot het uitgeven van deze fascinerende bronnen. Zij richtten een vereniging op die zij noemden naar Jan Huygen van Linschoten, de man die aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw zijn reisgeschriften publiceerde en daarmee voor de Nederlanders de zeeweg naar Azië openlegde. Het publiceren van reisverhalen is nog steeds de hoofddoelstelling van de Linschoten-Vereeniging. Ondertussen zijn er al meer dan honderd boeken gepubliceerd. Daarnaast organiseert de Linschoten-Vereeniging ook andere activiteiten die verband houden met reizen, over land en op zee. Momenteel is de Koninklijke Bibliotheek in voorbereiding om de eerste 60 Werken van de Linschoten-Vereeniging te digitaliseren en via het web beschikbaar te stellen.

Ik krijg vaak vragen van mensen die geïnteresseerd zijn om een voorvader of een andere persoon op te zoeken in de VOC-archieven. Zelf kan ik daar weinig hulp bij bieden: het archief in duiken is soms de enige oplossing. De onderstaande links kunnen daarbij misschien bij helpen. The Atlas Mutual Heritage

The Atlas Mutual Heritage (VOC settlements) is a data-bank providing a systematic survey of VOC trading posts and settlements and illustrative material of these locations. The data-bank is primarily intended for storing information relating to VOC settlements in Africa and Asia as well as illustrations of these settlements.

Dutch Asiatic shipping 1595-1795

Dutch Asiatic Shipping bevat de kerngegevens van de reizen die schepen voor de VOC en de Voorcompagnieën naar Indië maakten. Tussen 1595 en 1795 vertrokken ruim 1.800 schepen richting Azië, met in totaal 4.700 uitreizen; het aantal terugreizen bedraagt ruim 3.300.
De kerngegevens van elke reis bevat : naam van het schip, naam van de schipper, tonnage van het schip, jaar en werf van de bouw, de VOC-kamer waarvoor het schip voer, data van vertrek, tussenstop (aan Kaap de Goede Hoop) en aankomst, bemanning (uitgesplitst in verschillende categorieën), en bijzonderheden over de reis, zoals muiterij, schipbreuk en de naam van de commandant van de retourvloot. Alle gegevens zijn ontleend aan diverse bronnen in het archief van de VOC.
Het overzicht is net als de boeken Engelstalig. Toegang tot de site is kostenloos.

Data such as the names and occupations of the clients, brokers, benificiaries, and the types of currencies are included. Also information on the salaries of the VOC employees is mentioned in this data set.

The tables give an overview of the sales-value of various types of Indian and Chinese cloth in periods of five year from 1700 until 1795. The information is taken from the auction lists of the VOC.

Diary of Paulus Gevers of his journey to Batavia and Bantam, 1776-1777 is the account of the Rotterdam Patriot Paulus Gevers (1741-1797), who set sail on the 8th of December 1776 on the ship of Captain Adrianus Frederik de Graaff, 'De Jonge Lieve', as junior merchant of the 'Kamer Amsterdam' of the Dutch East India Company. He gives an almost daily account of life on board of the ship. On the 30th of March they reach the Cape of Good Hope. On the 14th of April they leave the Cape and arrive in Batavia on the 18th of June 1777. Paulus Gevers is member of a delegation going to Bantam for the coronation of the new Sultan. He also gives an account of this journey (22th of August - 14th of September 1777) and the visit.
